As a news portal, we report on many different issues and many of them generate a lot of passion. We have a very diverse audience and a duty to provide an impartial and balanced output. We are keen to encourage lively and informed debate that is why our Speak Out topics have no active moderation. A moderator will act only upon reported abuse.
Every comment submitted is instantly published on the site providing that you are a registered member. However, if you are not a registered member, you will only be able to read comments. Registration is free.

NEWSBACKATCHA will do its best to monitor the content of Speak Out discussions and remove comments that break the House Rules. Users of the site can always complain about any comment they see on the Speak Out pages by using the "Report Abuse" button on each comment.

How to complain about a comment
We want our users to help us keep the discussions accessible, safe and acceptable to all, so we welcome complaints and will deal with them speedily. Please don't abuse the complaints facility. It is only for serious complaints about comments, namely that they are obscene, abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, defamatory, harmful, profane, racially offensive, or otherwise strongly objectionable. Please do not use the complaints facility to complain about such things as spelling errors or differences of opinion. If you think a comment breaks the House Rules, click on Report Abuse.
Once you press the Submit button, your complaint will be brought to the attention of the Speak Out moderators. The Speak Out moderators will decide whether the comment breaks the House Rules. If it does, they will remove it. If it doesn't, it will be allowed to remain on the site. Members who abuse the rules will be warned, repeated offences will result in cancellation of their membership.

How does Recommendation work?

We want readers to tell us and other readers which comments they think are best and worth reading.

So if you are a registered user and you see a comment that you like, click Recommend. You can recommend as many comments as you want, but you can only recommend each comment once. All individual recommendations for each comment will be added to give each comment a recommendation score. At peak times there may be a time lag before your recommendation is added to the overall score. But it will be added. We try to re-calculate the recommendation score of comments as fast as possible.
Readers can then click on the Recommended on each discussion to see comments according to their recommendation score. The most recommended comments (and therefore the best, according to our readers) will appear at the top.

Why have you rewritten and changed the questions on a debate?
As many of our debates follow current and developing news events/stories, the content and questions are updated in relation to any changes in the story.
How do I find an old debate?
Search for the corresponding news story using NEWSBACKATCHA search where there will usually be a link to a debate from within the story.
Why have you closed a debate?
Debates are closed because the topic of discussion has moved out of the news headlines and a more important or relevant story has taken its place. Due to the volume of comments we receive on a daily basis we will only keep the most relevant and current topics open.
Do you have a character limit?
We do not set a character limit when a debate is opened. A character limit may be set to encourage users to make their point in a short and concise way.

How can I see if my comments have been published?
If you are a registered user and are signed in you will see a link called MY COMMENTS under the moderation status. If you click on this link you will be taken to your profile page where you can see the status of each of your comments. There is a comment status key on the right-hand side. ONLY MEMBERS CAN POST COMMENTS

Why can't I add a URL to my comment?
It is necessary for us to check any external internet sites to ensure that it does not contain any questionable or illegal content. If you know of a worthy web site relevant to the discussion, please inform the Speak Out moderators via the Contact Us
