President Obama was speaking at a Muslim Iftar dinner at the White House

US President Barack Obama has staunchly defended controversial plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York.

Opponents have protested against the construction of an Islamic cultural centre and mosque several hundred feet away from the site of the Twin Towers.

Mr Obama acknowledged "sensitivities" surround the 9/11 site, but said Muslims have the same right to practise their religion "as anyone else".

"Our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable," Mr Obama said.

I suppose that in the land of the free, people are free to build a mosque”

Since a New York developer announced plans to build a 13-storey Islamic community centre and mosque about two blocks from the former World Trade Center site, prominent Republican politicians and a host of conservative pundits have attacked the project.

Some relatives of people killed in the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 are also opposed to the plan.
'Stab in the heart'

In a speech at a White House dinner celebrating Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, Mr Obama waded into the row, saying:

"We must all recognise and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan, Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground. But let me be clear, as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practise their religion as anyone else in this country.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community centre on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are."
The proposed mosque site in New York The site of the proposed mosque is about two blocks from the former World Trade Center

He told the group of US Congressmen, government officials and foreign dignitaries that America's tradition of religious tolerance distinguishes it from "our enemies".

"Al-Qaeda's cause is not Islam," he said, "it is a gross distortion of Islam".

Until now Mr Obama had not commented on the mosque row, with the White House saying that the matter was a local issue.

In voicing his support for the right to build the centre, Mr Obama joins New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who had been the only prominent politician to endorse it.

Opponents of the building project have called for investigations into its backers and financing. In New York, opponents sought unsuccessfully to have the building currently at the mosque site granted landmark protection status, in an effort to hinder development.

Former US House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich dubbed the plan an "assertion of Islamist triumphalism" and has denounced it in speeches.

Former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin wrote that "to build a mosque at Ground Zero is a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks".

You America hating asshats need to get a clue. Obama is right.and you people are as bad as the Taliban. We don't need anyone to destroy this country from the outside you ignorant people are a cancer from within. The constitution means something, it is the foundation of this country. These people have every right to build a place of worship there, just as any other religious organization does. You can't pick and choose what rights you allow others based on your whim. That is about as un-American as you can get. You don't have to like it but you have to allow it, period. It kills me when people claim that someone is going to destroy the American way of life when they are the biggest threat.

Islam needs to be BANNED outside of the middle east. Let them bury their women up to their necks and stone them to death if that's what floats their boats. As long as they want to kill themselves and each other over there in their hellhole countries, who gives a flying f-luck? Men looking over their shoulders worried about the beard police, little 9 yr old girls being subjected to rape and sexual abuse by old perverted imams and sheiks, and older women being treated like palsied cattle.... Islam is a cancer in every country it inserts itself into. Look around you: every war being fought on the globe right now is being instigated by Islam pushers. That's all they know...that's what their entire "religion" was founded on- killing each other and everybody else in the name of some malevolent made-up "god" that justifies butchery, rampage, and carnage- as being "revealed" to a murderous child-molesting murderer named Mohammed. Anybody from any of those countries should be barred from entry into the United States. What does it tell you about countries ruled by Islam that no other religious texts are allowed in their countries, yet they come here and want their evil and hateful religion to be given concessions? We can kill all the Taliban and Al Qaeda people we want, but until we can admit that their ideology is just as hateful as Nazism was during the '30's and 40's, we're not doing anything but picking scabs off an infected wound. The ones doing the killing and dying are, according to their perverse religion, are the ONLY ONES guaranteed its "salvation." Who could ever conceive of such nonsense and call it "religion?" I don't have any problem with people who want to practice Islam....just practice it somewhere else; don't bring that crap over here. Islam didn't lay one brick in helping build this country; I'll be damned if they'll be allowed to come here and tear it down. You'll never be able to co-mingle with these barbaric and backward people. "Winning hearts and minds." What a friggin' joke. Until Islam is treated like Nazism, these people will continue to be subdued by it. Islam means submission, and if you don't realize these people can't change until it's ENTIRE philosophy is discredited from bottom to top, we're just tilting at windmills and setting ourselves and our country up for World War III. Going after the Taliban and Al Qaeda's rag tag soldiers is like swatting at flies with a coat hanger. We had to demonstrate that Nazism and Japanese Imperialism wouldn't be tolerated to win WW II. This war is no different. Until we understand that the entire notion of Islamism has to be philosophically framed for what it is, vocalized against in no uncertain language, exposed for the evil ideology it is, and discredited, we're living in denial of the enemy we're fighting and have no chance of defeating it by picking off one nutjob here and another nutjob there. The problem is, we have a leadership that seems to think just like FDR and Neville Chamberlain did, that it's better to try kissing their @$$es up one side and down the other, first. And just like them, they won't wake up until one of our military bases is bombed off the face of the map by Iran or Al Qaeda. Then we'll see who has the balls to stand up to Islam and finish the job, or be finished.

WOW! I can't believe how many of you are ignorant and uneducated. To hold an entire religion responsible because of a handful of extremist Muslims that committed a terrible crime is absolutely absurd. That's like saying...ok all Christains, no matter what their beliefs are should not be allowed to worship anywhere near Israel because of what Hitler did! There are over 1 billion Muslims...the majority of them are not extremists and condemn what went down on 911. Do you actually believe that in mosques here the imams are sitting there plotting a way to blow up another landmark?? NOO! But then again if you're ignorant and have never taken the time out to even get to know a Muslim American you wouldn't know this. I grew up with a lot of Muslims and have ended up partying with most of them because they end up being very Americanized. As far as the extremists go, there are extremists in every religion. GET OVER IT!!!

Barack OBAMA, during his Cairo speech, said: "I know, too, that Islam has always been a part of America 's story." AN AMERICAN CITIZEN'S RESPONSE: Dear Mr. Obama: Were those Muslims that were in America when the Pilgrims first landed? Funny, I thought they were Native American Indians. Were those Muslims that celebrated the first Thanksgiving day? Sorry again, those were Pilgrims and Native American Indians. Can you show me one Muslim signature on the United States Constitution? Declaration of Independence ? Bill of Rights? 'Didn't think so. Did Muslims fight for this country's freedom from England ? No. Did Muslims fight during the Civil War to free the slaves in America ? No, they did not. In fact, Muslims to this day are still the largest traffickers in human slavery. Your own half brother, a devout Muslim, still advocates slavery himself, even though Muslims of Arabic descent refer to black Muslims as "pug nosed slaves." Says a lot of what the Muslim world really thinks of your family's "rich Islamic heritage," doesn't it Mr. Obama? Where were Muslims during the Civil Rights era of this country? Not present. There are no pictures or media accounts of Muslims walking side by side with Martin Luther King, Jr. or helping advance the cause of Civil Rights. Where were Muslims during this country's Woman's Suffrage era? Again, not present. In fact, devout Muslims demand that women are subservient to men in the Islamic culture. So much so, that often they are beaten for not wearing the 'hajib' or for talking to a man who is not a direct family member or their husband. Yep, the Muslims are all for women's rights, aren't they? Where were Muslims during World War II? They were aligned with Adolf Hitler. The Muslim grand mufti himself met with Adolf Hitler, reviewed the troops and accepted support from the Nazis in killing Jews. Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren't flying planes into the World Trade Center , the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania , killing nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East . No one can dispute the pictures shown from all parts of the Muslim world celebrating on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely, the very "moderate" Muslims who's asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo , Egypt on June 4th were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence has meant approval for the acts of that day. And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the "rich heritage" Muslims have here in America . Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslim. And now we can add November 5, 2009 - the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major who is a doctor and a psychiatrist who was supposed to be counseling soldiers returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan . That, Mr. Obama, is the "Muslim heritage" in America .

President Obama was confused when he took the oath of office that states. "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." What he thought and meant that it said was: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Sharia Law of the United States." So we as Americans are the ones who are confused. .President Obama must be correct. We the American people are unpatriotic because we believe in the Constitution of the United States that President Obama sees as an treasonous document. So we who stand for the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights are traitors to our country. So I figure President Obama will have to execute us all for being domestic enemies.Remember President Obama is always right and us the people are always wrong no matter what. That is how President Obama thinks about us. It makes me angry and sad. How about you?
